List Of Martial Arts

list of martial arts
Are Martial arts that are active in competition or competition oriented real Martial Arts? list below?

List of arts that are competitive: Judo, BJJ, Karate, TKD, Wushu, Kunk Fu, Sambo, Kendo, fencing, archery, shooting (rifle competions in Winter Olympics), etc.

I would add boxing, Mauy Thai and kickboxing but they are sports with martial aspects rather than arts that have sport aspects.

Feel free to add to the lists.

Why can’t they be real martial arts? Judo, for example, is a martial art long before it’s debut into the olympics. Once there, did the art all of a sudden not become a martial art?

The problem is that traditionalists insist that martial art necessarily has a connotation of self-defense, and that competition isn’t self-defense. True enough, competition isn’t self-defense. But that doesn’t mean the art/sport/thing is not a martial art – it just means that the competitive aspect of the art/sport/thing isn’t self-defense.

It’s also not to say that competition won’t help you in a street fight. That’s true – if one tries ring techniques on the street. But a good fighter will be able to stand on his/her own in the ring and on the street. Only well-trained fighters can do this. And they can adapt their competitive aspects for street fighting, such as controlling adrenaline and dopamine, fine motor skill movement, thinking clearly under pressure, stamina, etc.

Next, what is your technical definition of martial art? A systemitized set of fighting skills? or anything that is self-defense? Must it have a catchy asian name? Does it have to have a name at all? Does it have to be ancient?

Because I’m thinking, Shotokukan is a martial art (of ancient feudal-era Japanese weaponry). Ah, weaponry. Wouldn’t handgun use be a martial art? No catchy name. But it is used for self-defense, and there are very specific techniques in order to perform it well. And there are competitions. In the old days, it was deuling. (oh, that’s a competition that is as very much a real self-defense! one miss, you die. literally.) Today, the military, police, and paramilitary personnel practice with guns, defend with guns, and compete with guns.

Would you consider sumo wrestling a martial art? Why not? The ancients fought to the death in competition. Speaking of fighting to the death in competition, so the gladiators. Isn’t what they practiced as martial an art as any other? And, the ancient Greeks did the same.

Competition doesn’t help in real self-defense? Well, look at sniper training. Snipers compete, and their skills are just as applicable on the battlefield as they are on a firing range.

Don’t take away the martial aspects of a martial art just because it has competition. Its self-defense applicability is watered down for competition only because of the instruction and the learning – not because of the art.

That said, boxing, wrestling, hand gun use, and Krav Maga are all martial arts, no matter how they evolved, and no matter they have a catchy name. Even tribal fighting arts of the Native American Indians, Africans, and aborigines of Austrailia and New Zealand.

They are in the business of self-defense, and all are martial arts.

On the other hand, by my definition, perhaps Haymaker-Do and Drunken Redneck Chuan are also viable martial arts, too. Okay, maybe not…

In its own way, this soundtrack to the cult SciFi Channel series embodies all the trends of film and, to a certain extent, TV-scoring circa 2006. Alien universes and mysterious plots are suggested by exotic instruments like gamelans and taikos; an otherwordly woman comes in at regular intervals to vocalize esoterically (“Lords of Kobol”); and thundering percussions suggest action (“Scar”). It’s as…
